EBL Battery Chemistry Types: Everything You Need to Know
Batteries are a necessary evil in the modern world. We rely on them to power our phones, laptops, cars, etc. But most of us know very little about how batteries work. In this article, we will discuss the different types of battery chemistries and what makes them unique.
Li-ion
Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular type of battery on the market today. They are used in everything from cell phones to laptops, and they have a very high energy density. This means that they can store a lot of energy in a small space.
Lithium-ion batteries also have a long life span and can be recharged many times.
These batteries are expensive because the materials used to make them are quite rare. Lithium-ion batteries also need to be carefully managed, or they can overheat and catch fire.
Some of the most common Lithium-ion batteries are:
- 18650
- AA
- USB AA
- USB CR123A
- USB 9V
- 9V
- AAA
- And more.
Volt range: 1.5v to 9v
mAh capacity range: 350mAh - 5000mAh
Ni-Mh
Ni-Mh batteries are environmentally friendly since they do not possess any toxic materials. These batteries are used in cell phones, laptops, etc, since they are rechargeable. They are meant to have a longer lifespan and high energy density as well.
Common Ni-Mh batteries are:
- AA
- AAA
- D
- C
- 9V
- AAAA
Volt range: 1.2v to 9v
mAh capacity range: 280mAh - 10000mAh
Ni-Cd
Ni-Cd batteries are the oldest type of rechargeable battery. They were first developed in 1899 by Swedish scientist Waldemar Jungner. These batteries have a high energy density and can be discharged and recharged many times.
However, they are also expensive to produce and are not as environmentally friendly as other types of batteries.
Ni-Cd batteries are used in a variety of applications, including power tools, electric vehicles, and backup power systems.
Common Ni-Cd batteries are:
- AAA
- AA
- C
- Sub C
Volt: 1.2v
mAh capacity range: 1100mAh - 5000mAh
Alkaline Batteries
Alkaline batteries are used in high-drain devices such as digital cameras and flashlights. They have a higher energy density than other types of batteries, making them ideal for devices that require a lot of power.
One downside of alkaline batteries is that they have a shorter shelf life than other types of batteries. They also tend to leak more easily, so keeping them in a well-ventilated area is essential.
Common Alkaline batteries are:
- AA
- AAA
- 9V
- 4LR44
- D
- C
Volt range: 1.5v - 9v
mAh capacity range: 115mAh - 20000mAh
Lithium Manganese Dioxide(LMO)
Lithium manganese dioxide (Li-MnO₂) batteries are a type of lithium-ion battery. They offer a high energy density and are well suited for applications that require frequent discharge and recharge cycles, such as in electric vehicles.
Li-MnO₂ batteries have a few disadvantages, however. They are sensitive to high temperatures and can be damaged if exposed to too much heat. Furthermore, they tend to have a shorter lifespan than other types of lithium-ion batteries. Despite these drawbacks, Li-MnO₂ batteries are still widely used in various applications.
Common Lithium Manganese Dioxide batteries are:
- CR2450
- TB-RF67
Volt range: 3v - 6v
mAh capacity range: 210mAh - 600mAh
